X-Array

Electro-Voice · 1997

Evidence status · documented

Identity and core specifications are documented; some historical fields remain unavailable.

Electro-Voice's X-Array debuted on the Rolling Stones' 1997–98 Bridges to Babylon tour. It was a family of conventional horn-loaded concert cabinets assembled into large horizontal arrays and vertically arranged clusters, not a modern coupled vertical line array. EV's catalogue distinguishes it from the later X-Line: the new system sought to retain X-Array's output and vocal intelligibility while changing how coverage was distributed.

Why it mattered

  1. 01

It made EV a major competitor in large-format touring.

  2. 02

Its Ring-Mode Decoupling addressed resonances within the loudspeaker system; this is a different engineering problem from controlling interference between adjacent cabinets.

  3. 03

The later X-Line used a coupled vertical line-array arrangement; XLC is a separate model family, not another name for X-Array.

Engineering record

Core technology
Ring-Mode Decoupling to suppress driver and horn resonances[3]
HF driver
ND5 high-frequency driver with a 1.4-inch exit on a 60°×40° rotatable horn (Xcn); the Xcn is a near-field two-way mid-bass/HF cabinet, not a specification for every X-Array model.[3]
Array approach
EV describes X-Array as a traditional horizontal array system. Its Xcn sheet documents rear-hinge rigging and shared enclosure/rigging geometry among half-size X-Array models, enabling repeatable multi-cabinet assembly.[3][1]
